Samsung TV + HBO GO Workaround

So this happened a while back:

It broke with no solution in sight

What happened was I started the HBO GO app on my Samsung Smart TV and it showed the initial “Activate” screen. I tried repeatedly to re-activate my Samsung Smart TV to use HBO GO and it failed every time.

Samsung to the rescue?

After a few replies from Samsung on Twitter, Samsung finally provided me with a solution: RESET THE SMART HUB TO FACTORY SETTINGS

I don’t know about you, but this is NOT an acceptable solution to me. Yes, it works, but only temporarily and then you must also reset all the settings again to the way you like them.

Figuring out a workaround

After messing around with it for a while, I finally figured out a workaround
By following these steps, you will get signed into HBO GO (for at least a little while).

Steps to get it working:

  1. Launch HBO GO
  2. Click “Browse HBO GO” (not “Activate”)
  3. Choose any video and press “Play”
  4. It will ask you to activate, go ahead and activate your account
    1. Go to http://hbogo.com/activate
    2. Choose Samsung TV
    3. Login to your service provider
    4. Type in the activation code
  5. Now, if you get in, then great, you’re done! Otherwise if you see an error, it’s ok. Move on to the next step.
  6. Turn off TV
  7. Turn on TV
  8. Launch HBO GO
  9. You should be logged in! (at least for a little while)

Extra information

It looks like HBOGO is aware of the problem and is waiting (helplessly) on Samsung to fix the problem

My TV Model is UN65F7100, so this problem probably exists on all 2013 F-Series Samsung TV Models.
